There was a time when teachers regarded parents as a necessary evil in education. This notion, the new school has abandoned. The modern educator seeks the active interest and co-operation of parents in the education of their children. The new school realizes the importance that home and school share a mutual interest and responsibility in the child’s total living and that without co-operation of home and school, they can not be successful in educating the child. The result is that parents and teachers meet in small or large groups to discuss their common problems. In some schools, parents assists in the office and classroom, they participate in field trips and many other social and community undertakings.

It is the duty of the preschool teacher to educate the parents also. For this purpose he should arrange special lectures, cinema shows, exhibitions etc. in the school, and the parents should be invited. The parents may have their own special problems that they want to communicate to the teachers. It is only when there is free and frequent connections between the parents and the teacher that all the problems concerning the education of the child can be solved. Teachers need to get co-operation from the parents in order to discharge their duties. In the interest of pupils, a teacher should have intimate relationship with parents by organizing Parent- Teacher Association (PTA).

Froebel’s 7 Gifts to Kindergarten

Gift I :  First gift consists of six colored woolen balls, three in primary colors and three secondary colors. The occupation consists in rolling them about in play. Thus, they help the children in developing the idea of color, material form, motion and direction.

Gift II :  Second gift consists of a sphere, cube and cylinder made of hardwood. In playing with these the children start noticing the difference between the stability of the cubes and the mobility of the spheres. He observes that the cylinder is both stable and movable.

Gift III :  Third gift is a large cube divided into eight smaller equal cubes. From these the children can build up a number of useful artistic forms such as branches, doors, bridge, etc. and the ideas of addition and subtraction. For this reason, the third gift is often called “the first building box”.

Gift IV :  Fourth gift consists of large cubes divided into six long primes. In each of these the length is twice the breadth is twice the thickness. This helps the children to construct different kinds of building and patterns.

Gift V :  Gift number Five is very much like the third gift. It consists of a large cube divided into twenty-seven small cubes, three of which are again divided diagonally into halves and three into quarters. The child can construct many beautiful forms and patterns by combining the third, fourth and fifth gifts and it gives him great pleasure to do so.

Gift VI :  Sixth gift is again similar to Gift V. In it, a large cube is divided into 18 whole and 9 small long blocks. Still hearth designs in forms and constructions may be made by the child and it will also be useful in teaching numbers.

Gift VII :  Seventh gift is a set of square and triangular tables made of very fine wood in two colors. It provides materials for much exercise in geometrical forms and mosaic work.

Kindergarten and Preschool Objectives

“Most  kindergarten and preschools have  different activities but objectives are just common, proper childhood development in every aspect. Lets have a look at various development activities kindergarten teachers and preschool institutes focus on..”

Physical development

A child when he joints the nursery school is still a toddler. He often falls down when he walks or runs; Cannot climb steps without support, as his muscles are not fully developed. The nursery school (Kindergarten or any Preschool institute) should provide suitable indoor activities like tearing, cutting, pasting, drawing, painting, threading beads etc. For final muscular co-ordination and outdoor activities such as climbing, jumping, sliding, swinging, pedaling for the large muscular development of children. Physical fitness is the objective of such activities and programs.

Good Health Habits

In any preschool program, children are taken to toilet and for washing hands at regular intervals. Then children are told about the necessity of brushing teeth, combing hair or taking bath through free conversation, stories and puppetry. These activities help children to develop proper health habits. The children are encouraged to do their own
work and be self-reliant.

Social development

Desirable social attitudes can be developed by encouraging the children to share play materials or food with each other, wait for their turn and take care of the school property. Here the objective is focused on social behavior of every children.

Emotional development

A child has hardly any control over his emotions when he comes to school. He can hardly wait for his turn and is often unable to take ‘NO’ but by proper and careful guidance by the kindergarten and preschool teacher he gains better emotional control by the time he leaves the nursery school.

Aesthetic development

There are many beautiful things around in the environment but unless the children’s attention is drawn to these, they do not notice them. The children should be encouraged to appreciate beauty in the environment, such as pretty flowers colorful butterflies, or a beautiful view. In today global warming situations, It is a duty of preschool teachers to educate children and should be made aware of such things.

Intellectual development

A young child is very curious and he is always asking questions. Much depends on how his questions are answered and his curiosity is satisfied. A child can take in many things if they are properly explained to him. At the same time, the objective should be that the kindergarten child should be encouraged to investigate and draw his own conclusions rather than remain satisfied with ready answers. This will help him to understand the world in which he lives to foster new interests.

Creative development

The creative development of the child depends on the opportunities he gets for self-expression through drawing and paintings, music, drama or puppetry. A kindergarten child is encouraged to express him in the nursery school. He is helped to work on his own and create objects that are of his choice.

Language development

The language development of the child depends, to a great extent, on the opportunities he gets to se language or listen to correct speech. Through storybook reading, free conversation, puppet play, etc. new words are introduced to the children and these new words are used again and again till they became a part of their active vocabulary. The children in the nursery school are encouraged to talk in a group, describe his experiences and join on the spot story-making activity.

Above were some of the very important objectives focused on childhood education program by most of the nursery, kindergarten and preschools around the world. It is important that you have this checklist before your kid is admitted to any institutes.
